For our 28th annual event, TCC features six plenary sessions over three days. These sessions are scheduled so that participants may view a live session during a typical workday in four regions of the world: Asia (JST), Hawaii (HST), North America (EDT) and Europe (EEST).
Regardless of your location, there will be a plenary session that you can join in real-time. These sessions are recorded and available for viewing the following day.

~ Cross-Campus Collaborative to Build an ADA-Aware Faculty Cohort ~
Description:
This session will share the collaborative techniques, materials and tools used to develop and facilitate an online professional development program on online ADA accessibility for University of Hawai‘i faculty. Participants will be invited to join in a discussion of techniques for gaining faculty buy-in for professional development on topics faculty may resist and to share relevant experiences of their own.

Description:
Students are more willing to invest their time and effort in the teaching-learning dynamic when they have choice and voice in the path by which they master the instructor-established objectives and choice in how they demonstrate their understanding. This presentation explores innovative assignments and activities that promote student agency while simultaneously fostering critical thinking, analysis, engagement, and deep learning that can be integrated into the online classroom.

Jean Mandernach, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the Center for Innovation in Research and Teaching at Grand Canyon University. She presents and consults in the field of online education and serves on various editorial boards including the Journal of Educators Online, eLearn Magazine, InSight: A Journal of Scholarly Teaching, and Journal of Instructional Research. Her research focuses on enhancing student learning in the online classroom through innovative instructional and assessment strategies.
~ The Esports Internships ~
Description:
During the summer of 2021, UH Mānoa's (UHM) esports program partnered with Activision-Blizzard, one of the largest video games companies in the world, to produce a series of tournaments during a time when COVID-19 had prevented a return to full-scale global events. Through the 20 internships created, UHM students shadowed the OWL crew, learning the skills required to run a league that included setting up the competition spaces for professional teams to play, running through the games’ integrity checks to keep competitions fair, and taking part in helping create content for the global broadcast of the league.

Dr. Nyle S. Kauweloa, director of UH Esports, created one of the earliest esports-related college courses in the United States in 2018. (UH Esports was awarded the best collegiate esports program in North America at the Las Vegas Esports Awards in December 2022.) His research focuses on the lived experiences of college esports players to understand how student-players negotiate multiple demands, pressures, and expectations they have of themselves as students.
Description:
Promoting online department PLCs can increase a sense of community for faculty in addition to providing an avenue for sharing UDL strategies. This session will share results and approaches of PLC research in two different universities focusing on community and online UDL teaching practices.

She conducts assistive technology evaluations, consultations, and trainings around the state of Connecticut and supports teachers, students, and individuals in appropriate consideration, selection, and implementation of tools to increase student learning.

Immersive technologies (virtual, augmented reality and mixed reality [VR/AR/MR]), have opened opportunities in education. An overview of past and on-going projects at the Innovative Immersive Technologies for Learning research group (IMTEL) and lab at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, focuses on development of educational immersive applications in the fields of STEM, climate change, medicine, history, protection of civilians and career guidance.

She founded and leads the Innovative Immersive Technologies for Learning (IMTEL) research group and VR lab at NTNU. During the academic year 2022-2023, Ekaterina has been a visiting professor at LTEC, UH Manoa.
Description:
eSports, where viewers watch gamers compete, is changing the landscape of high school and middle school sports. ‘Iolani School in Honolulu has a successful eSports program which includes selecting games, recruiting players, and finding tournaments. This session will present best practices and action-based steps to help schools start their own eSports programs.

Gabriel Yanagihara is an educator and entrepreneur, born and raised in Hawaii, with a wide-ranging expertise in computer science, creative media, and video game design. As the Head Coach for Esports and a teacher at Iolani School, he has led the growth of the Esports program from 12 to over 300 students, while also mentoring and supporting his teams and coaches to achieve multiple State Titles in League of Legends, Rocket League, Smash Bros and other Esports games.
